Nook's precision ball screws operate through ball bearings which help transfer the load between the nut and screw. The bearing balls ride along an ogival-shaped thread that is formed from two arcs of the same radius with offset centers. This form is referred to as a gothic arch. Ball screws offer the low-friction advantage of antifriction screws at a lower cost and are capable of longer life and higher speeds than comparable acme-type lead screws.
While acme screws often average efficiencies of about 50 percent, ball screws have efficiencies that are often more than 90 percent. By design, ball screws travel smoothly over the entire travel range. Ball screws can be attached to the nut by a number of different configurations, including mounting and pinning the ball nut flange, standard flange orientation and proper ball nut orientation.
