40 Years In Motion

Cleveland, OH - January 3, 2010

Nook Industries (Cleveland, OH) has recently completed its fortieth (40th) year as an industry leading manufacturer of integrated linear motion components. Today Nook provides turnkey manufacturing of the world's most comprehensive linear motion product lines - comprising over 10,000 configurable products for a myriad of market applications including: transportation, medical/diagnostics, paper, chemical, food/beverage, solar/aerospace, military, entertainment, and communications markets.

Nook's formidable growth trajectory over 40 years is marked by its current status as being the only manufacturer in the industry with onsite engineering design, manufacturing, analysis, and control - all located in one facility in Cleveland, Ohio.

Founded by Joseph H. Nook, Jr. in 1969, Nook Industries has since steadily pinpointed growth markets. Comprised of Nook's Precision Screw & Actuator Groups respectively, the ISO 9001:2008 registered company boasts major linear motion component lines including: ball screw assemblies, acme screw assemblies, planetary roller screws, worm gear screw jacks, electric cylinder actuators, linear bearings, round shafting, linear slide systems, end bearing supports and precision end machining for inch and metric markets.

1970's - Evolution of Nook:

Upon its paradigm shift to manufacturing and its inception as Nook industries in 1969, the company marked its first ten years throughout the 1970's by establishing the core production and marketing of its Power-AC™ Acme Screw Assemblies and ActionJac™ Worm Gear Screw Jack product lines.

1980's - Broadcasting Growth:

By the early 1980's, Nook had established its complete ActionJac™ product line and was primed for growth with the advent of the satellite revolution in broadcast television. By 1983 direct satellite dishes were being readily adopted by the large broadcasting networks and Nook secured major orders for its ActionJac™ Worm Gear Screw Jacks for satellite dish actuators for the ABC & CBS networks respectively.

(See Image 2 in Figure 1 Below)

By the mid-1980's Nook had sold a large volume of its ActionJac™ product line to service the booming home direct satellite market and was positioned to expand its operations to accommodate its growing ball screw manufacturing capabilities. By the late 80's Nook's increased its manufacturing capabilities to include heat treating, large thread-rolling equipment, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines.

The end of the decade was also marked by Nook being granted member status for The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and the establishment of its Power-Trac Ball Screw and Power-Trax™ Linear Bearing, Shafting and Component product line.

1990's - Capacity in Motion

By the early 1990's, Nook's commitment to growing via vertical integration was in full swing as it was manufacturing everything they sold; with the exception of peripherals. In 1997 all operations were consolidated to its current 120,000 square foot manufacturing and office space on Cleveland's East 49th Street.

Notable achievements during this decade included the installation of the world's largest capacity precision thread roller with regular production of 2"- 6" diameter, and the ability to roll up to 14" diameter. Where commercial grade rolled-thread screws were the standard, precision-rolled production leveraged an automated heat treatment and cnc thread-rolling process that offers the highest accuracy. According to Nook Industries' CEO, Christopher Nook, "We are the first in the United States to introduce this technology and it allows us to produce precision-rolled ball screws and roller screws that re the best in their class."

Additionally, Nook introduced an industry first 5-year guarantee on its ActionJac™ line and was awarded the 'Family Firm of Distinction' by the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.

2000's - Streaming Efficiencies:

Over the past decade Nook's knowledgeable design and manufacturing engineers continued to explore innovative methods and implement vigorous quality systems to ensure product safety, reliability and advanced performance to increase efficiency including:

  • Established an advanced configurable and downloadable 2D & 3D CAD library at "" to reduce engineer's development time.
  • Published a 416 page product catalog; introducing Planetary Roller Screws, Metric Lead Screws, Ball Screws, Worm Gear Screw Jacks, MM Slides, Linear Shafting, and Pillow Blocks, etc.
  • Started the Precision Actuator Group (2005)
  • NRS™ Nook Planetary Roller Screw product line established
  • ISO 9001:2008 Certification

Conclusion / Future - Expanding Linear Excellence:

From the beginning, Nook has adopted a dedicated growth model of "vertically" integrated manufacturing at Nook's Cleveland, OH based facilities. This has allowed the company to identify and react quickly to growth markets and applications that will benefit from Nook's on-site control of thread rolling, die design, and manufacturing. Commitment to technology also offers flexible, efficient customization with design validation through the use of precision measurement equipment.

Targeted growth in new product applications includes metric products to service World markets and small diameter ball screws for Military, Medical, and other OEM market applications for Nook's actuator line.

Continuing in the family-owned tradition of stability and commitment to excellence, Joe Nook Jr. continues to be active in strategy and operations. His sons, Chris Nook and Joe Nook III have served as CEO and COO respectively since 1999, with Ron Domeck serving as President since 1987. According to Joe Nook Jr., "Into the next decade and beyond, Nook Industries is committed to continue its tradition as a family-owned industry leading manufacturer of linear motion components and systems that are made in the U.S.A."
